The Background of the Board

The Arab Board of Medical Specializations was founded in order to meet the need for doctors trained in medical specializations in the Arab World.  Previously, doctors who had gone abroad for medical specialization training had faced financial burdens and many other obstacles.  In addition, the region lost the services of these doctors when they were trained outside.  Specialization training was beginning in many areas of the Middle East, and medical educators realized that it was necessary to standardize this training. The Council of Arab Health Ministers founded the Board in 1978 after years of discussion, and the following year, basic guidelines and the structure of the Board were established.

The Goals of the Board

To work toward the improvement of the health services in the Arab World by improving residency training programs in cooperation with teaching institutions.

To set comprehensive training standards for the various specialties and to monitor the progress of the residents during and after the training program.

To establish a basis for the uniform assessment of the scientific, technical, and practical level of the trainees.
