Training
Centers
|
The Scientific Council accepts teaching hospitals as training
centers after a thorough evaluation. There are minimum
requirements, which include such factors as hospital size,
facilities, and the availability of full time faculty in multiple
specialties. The suitability of the hospital is verified by means
of visits from a local committee and the training committee from
the Scientific Council as a final step. Reevaluation of each
training center is carried out every five years. For further information, see the Arabic version.

Examinations |
|
Certification
examination consists of two parts:
-
Part One is a written examination given
after 1-2 years of training. His own supervisors and the head of
the department in which he is training must sponsor each
candidate. The examination may be repeated 3-4 times. If the
candidate does not pass the examination, he is dismissed
from the program.
-
Part Two consists of written, oral, and
clinical skills sections. It is administered at the end of the
training program. Each candidate must have passed Part One
before he is eligible to register to take Part Two. Two
supervisors must sponsor each candidate. The written exam must
be passed before the oral and clinical skills sections can be
taken.
The
Examination Committee is responsible for each written
examination. This committee meets to select questions for each
examination and organize its administration. The Committee is
responsible for supervising the selection of questions, printing,
proof reading, and all administrative details.
Written
examinations consist of multiple-choice questions. The
examinations are corrected by computer in Damascus at the Office
of the Secretary General in the presence of a member of the
Examination Committee. The examiners are chosen from the
Examination Committee, the Scientific Committee, and from outside
the Board at the discretion of the Committee. Qualified local and
foreign specialists may be invited to participate in these
examinations, but the policy is that each candidate should be
examined by individuals who are of a different national origin.
Examination
centers are chosen based on the number of candidates taking an
exam. In general, the examinations are given wherever there are
10 or more candidates. The candidates are referred to the closest
center possible to take examinations.
Certification is conferred after completing the training program
and passing all of the required examinations.
